We got the chance to try out the Roadtour software for Garmin PND units. Long- term mod Andy_p seized the chance and here's what he thought about it.

Sony: Definitely no Nav-U80 and 81TLast September, it was still looking good: Sony announced two new PND’s and seemed determined to become a big player in satnav-land. These devices, the Nav-U80 and the Nav-81T, both featuring a 4.3 inch touch screen and support for handsfree phoning via Bluetooth, were supposed to become available by mid-November last year and give Sony’s market share a boost.

Delay
Less than two weeks after the initial announcement, it was clear that the planned timescale for the introduction had been too optimistic. Sony let us know that both devices would be delayed until ‘sometime’ in 2007, without giving any details as to what had caused this. Now it’s become apparent that the later announcement can also be ignored, because yesterday Sony announced that the Nav-U80 and Nav-81T are no longer part of their future plans.

Sony has confirmed the cancellation, and sent us this bulletin:

“Sony have withdrawn the proposed NV-U80B and NV-U81T personal navigational systems. The next generation of Sony PND's are already in development, and we feel that our customers will be happy to wait for the newer units which have a greater number of features”.

Nav-U51 and U71T
Sony, however, still holds a few cards in their hand when it comes to the PND market. We’re referring to the Nav-U51 and Nav-U71T here. These new devices are about as large as their predecessors, the Nav-U50 and Nav-U70, but they are a bit thinner (33 mm), lighter (280 grams) and feature the SiRF Star III chipset.

The Nav-U51 (recommended retail price: ¤ 299,-), and Nav-U71T (¤ 449,-) are largely identical. They differ when it comes to TMC (standard on U71T, optional for U51) and the installed maps: the Nav-U51’s 512 MB of memory carries a regional map and the U71T’s 2 GB of memory the complete European map.

its not as good news for sony fans. This also means that sony may not be a major player in GPS in future. Though sony 71t is a good unit, the lack of support from sony may kill this product. A company like sony should not do a half hearted job.

I have owned a sony nav-u51 since 28th Dec.2006. It was a late Xmas present to me and was bought for it's function of camera warnings. No one warned me when I bought it that the camera warnings would not work until a website was up and running. We went back to the sony centre and they had no idea about this problem at all. I had to e mail Sony and then I was told about it. I still have this device without camera warnings working. It was sold to me under misleading conditions. When I e mail Sony I get very curt replies with no information. I want a refund on this product as it does not do what it is supposed to. Surely this should be taken to the Office of Fair Trading.

You should complain to the police. Tell them you only got it so you could speed around with impunity.

This is a message to everyone reading this. As I posted before, I bought my sony GU-51 on 28th Dec 2006. I have waited since then for the website to happen from which I could get camera warnings. I warn anyone who buys one of these sony sat nav's that you need to be a brain surgeon before you get the downloads needed to get your camera warnings. It is only through many and I mean many very kind and helpful messages from 'Vikash' that I have at last got my camera warnings activated. I cannot believe the difficulty that Sony have put me through. If you try and contact Sony themselves to ask how to do this or that, you will wait days for an answer. If I had asked all the questions of Sony that I have asked Vikash I would have waited until next Xmas by the time I had got all the answers.

I will never ever buy anything Sony again. The backup is disgusting and they put out devices onto the market before the backup websites are online. Watch out with Sony !!!!!

the speed camera does work. I tested it today. yesterday i did receive a mail from sony. Here it is.

Dear Sir,
You should return to the website and ensure that you have downloaded the Speed Camera Content from the place where this symbol appears, (arrow pointing down in orange square) ?

All you have to do is log into your profile and complete the download making sure that your product is plugged in. Then the "Activate Advanced Warnings" will appear on the product screen.

Kind regards,
